GOTTA.
GO.
FAST!
Happy 30th anniversary to Sonic the Hedgehog! It’s time to celebrate the past, present and future of everyone’s favourite blue blur, now in a blocky bod’. That’s right, he’s blasted his way into our brand new DLC, which is available now on the Minecraft Marketplace. Let’s zoom along and check out all of the features this new game has to offer!
Sprint, Roll and Spring Through New Challenges
Welcome to Green Hill Zone. It’s one of the iconic locations, straight from Mobius, that we’ve lovingly recreated here in Minecraft. It’s got blockified versions of everything you’d expect; from rings, to springs to those REALLY ANNOYING ROBOT FISH I CAN NEVER DODGE. MY RINGS, MY PRECIOUS RINGSSS! I WILL GET REVENGE.
Ahem. Well huh, anyway. Instead of facing each zone one by one, Sonic in Minecraft takes a more arcadey approach-- there’s an infinite number of acts for you to speed your way through, racing to get the highest score and to leave your pathetic friends in the dust. Make sure to collect those nice and shiny rings! You’ll need to hang onto them to progress through the zone.
Green Hill Zone may look pretty but it’s no walk in the park. The ever-fearsome Dr Eggman has sent his army of Badniks after you, so smash through their defences and free the critters within. If you slow down once in a while, you might spot a cracked wall, which surely hides a secret.
Once you’re done smelling the sunflowers, next up is Chemical Plant Zone! It’s crawling with spikey new Badniks to grapple with. You’ll also be pushing suspicious buttons, opening doors and taking a plunge into vats of Eggman’s Mega Muck, ew!
Soon you will rise to greater heights than ever and explore the treacherous temple surrounding the skies of Angel Island; the Sky Sanctuary Zone. Here a fierce army of Eggrobos await, and you can’t even trust that the ground you’re standing on won’t crumble away into dust…
And then, there’s Eggman Mode. We don’t talk about Eggman Mode. I hope you can run fast because you’ll be dashing away from your own mortality in this brutally hardcore gamemode. Good luck...
The Gang’s All Here!
It’s not just Sonic who’s gotten some blockification! The gang have gathered in Tails’s Lab to set off on their latest adventure. From the start, you can play as either Sonic, Tails or Knuckles, as nature intended. Each offers a different playstyle and unique abilities. Let's take a look!
Sonic the Hedgehog, of course, is super duper fast. Like maybe faster than the speed of sound? If you want to rapidly get to max speed, you can use Sonic’s Spin Dash ability to roll up into a ball and burst through the air.
That spikey blur would love to be the center of attention, but leave some room in the limelight for Tails the Fox, his faithful friend. Tails is not as fast as the infamous blue hedgehog, but he can spin his cute propeller-like tails and hover through the air.
To complete the trio Knuckles the Echidna glides in and offers a radically different play style. Master his punch attacks to combo through enemies, taking them down with grace and style. When in the air, Knuckles can activate his glide and swoop over obstacles.
But that’s not all, folks! If you gather up plenty of rings you can unlock two more playable characters.
Amy the Hedgehog carries a hammer, allowing her to smash the ground and cause damage to all enemies around her. She also has the incredibly overpowered double jump, allowing her to access new heights or dodge away from demise.
Finally, there’s the Ultimate Lifeform himself, Shadow the Hedgehog. He can harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds to use Chaos Control, allowing him to swiftly defeat his enemies and blast himself through the air. Playing as Shadow is dangerous but effective.
‘Kay that’s all the playable characters! There definitely isn’t a Supersonic secret or anything! Moving on…
We wanted to celebrate the full scope of the Sonic franchise, so we’ve included twenty-four characters as skins! These skins are usable in your own Minecraft worlds or on multiplayer servers. We’ve got everyone from Cream the Rabbit, to Rouge the Bat and even Dr Eggman himself.
There Are So Many Secrets Y’all
You could say we went the extra mile. Haha, get it? Like “miles per hour”-- it was a very clever pun!
We jammed Tails’s Lab with references to as many games and pieces of Sonic propaganda as we could. Pay attention to the details, you might see some familiar faces! I’m not going to spoil all of the game's secrets, okay? Honestly, I am regretting having an entire sub-section about them. Let’s just say there are Special Stages, and some colourful spiky rocks to collect. Capeesh?
ALSO, THERE’S A CHAO GARDEN.
Whoops. I shouldn’t have typed that. It was meant to be a secret. Oh well, there’s no going back! Chaos (Like Chao-s, not like “Chaos”. Which gets confusing) are a species of cute little critters known for their fabulous performance in Sonic Adventure. Each time you complete one of the special achievements, a new Chao arrives. You can also pet them. THIS IS WHAT INNOVATION LOOKS LIKE, PEOPLE.
Happy Anniversary, Sonic. It’s been a long and windy road, but oh boy, what a journey. I hope I have convinced you to check out Sonic the Hedgehog, which is available now on the Minecraft Marketplace. We poured a whole lot of heart into it!
